Kuk
Sool Won is a Korean martial art that has many health benefits. The
most obvious one is muscle flexibility and body conditioning. When
a martial art is practiced several times a day, a difference can be
noticed with the body. The muscles become firmer, fat is lost and
the body becomes energized. Many of our students have lost a few clothes
sizes from actively participating in classes and practicing at home.
Because of this, their self-esteem increases and a desire to lead
a healthier lifestyle develops.
Being
in a martial art, the student learns self-defense techniques. Kuk
Sool has techniques that deal with wrist grabs, clothing grabs, neck
grabs, joint locks and pressure points. There are anywhere from six
to fifteen defense techniques to each set. The student eventually
feels confident that they will have the ability to defend themselves
or a loved one if the need arises.
Once the student reaches
the higher belt levels, the spiritual and healing methods are introduced
into the curriculum. The student learns acupressure, acupuncture,
internal energy systems and herbal medicines.

Being
in tune with one's body is very important. This quote from page 13 of
Volume One of the Kuk Sool Won Textbook is believed by all instructors:
"Training in Kuk Sool Won also helps to instill self-confidence and
self-discipline, a calm self-assurance, and the psychological and spiritual
values which are traditionally associated with the martial character.
Mental and physical well-being is of primary importance in Kuk Sool
Won."
Our
school is ver family oriented. Parents bring their children into the
school to learn discipline, fitness and well-being. The partents often
become students as well, and an increase in quality family time develops.
Finding an activity that each family member can enjoy together yet which
is paced to each individual's needs is rare. This is an added benefit
to Kuk Sool Won.
There are many benefits that
result from practicing this martial art. Perhaps the most important
benefit for the individual is knowing that they are on the road to creating
a better, healthier lifestyle for themselves, that others are interested
in helping them achieve their goals and will be there to assist them
accomplish those goal.
